This song was not initially intended as a single. That's not to say we didn't like the song , but after finishing Ivy & the Big Apples we had absolutely no idea what songs would be singles. I did have a good feeling about Pony as it was so different than anything we'd done before. And I think when you have a song like that you should go for it and put it out there. Take a chance. We also liked the lyrics that I wrote in a mad stream of consciousness session at the studio in about 20 minutes. No joke. I think all those feelings about the music business were stewing away inside and just came out all at once. But we had absolutely NO idea that it would be a hit. Couldn't have imagined that at all. Being the first Australian band to win the Triple J Hottest 100 was astonishing to us. But I'm really glad in retrospect that it was with this song - I think a lot of people were feeling the same way we were about their music & it struck a chord with people. It's a song I'm really proud of.

When Janet sang this in the studio we were all gobsmacked. It was the same with Goin Off, and other songs on Ivy. She had started experimenting with a much softer voice on this record, something she hadn't done on previous albums, and the result was amazing- we would all sit in silence and listen when she sang this way. Calypso touched a lot of people, particularly girls who loved Janet and the song. It still does. Janet has always been the artist in our band. In the early days she didn't sing much & felt more comfortable painting than playing bass, while me & Whitt would live and die for our instrument. But as time went on she started singing more and more, until her voice became so beautiful it makes me cry. I think Calypso was in a lot of ways the start of this - and you can hear it in the character of the song. To see thousands of fans singing this song with her is always emotional for me. Whitt's guitar hook is also so great, this song is really close to our hearts as it's about breaking out and feeling joy. There's a lot of love in our band, we've been through a lot together, and it's all there in Calypso.

It's hard to describe the feeling when you have a number 1 hit. Our manager Fiona sent through a message from the record label that the song had gone to number 1 nationally. It was the strangest feeling I've ever had. More relief and calm than euphoria and celebration. Time seemed to stop for a moment. Sylvia's production was awesome, really arse kickin shit ! And I love playing this song live, it gets really fucking mental to drum & sing this track at our gigs... crazy euphoria madness. So great. One of the best things about it was Ledbelly's family sent a message to us that they really liked our version. That was amazing for us. When you have a hit like this it can really set you up - but I'm glad this came for us later in our career when we had a lot of time as a band behind us already. I think having such a big hit early or with yr first single can be a bit of a curse for some bands as you can never top it.

So from Janet & I we move to Whitt and I. No other song better sums up our insane jamming madness writing than this track. We used to jam in my backyard in Finley during the holidays when Whitt was at boarding school.

Just drums & guitar. Both still in high school we first jammed this song. We loved how fun punk rock & weird country it was, but never thought other people would like it, let alone the song become our first unofficial hit.

We would just play it over & over for ourselves and go nuts. When we first played it on the main stage at the Sydney Big Day Out in the early 90's 35,000 people sang it back to us. Our band was never the same after that.

This is probably my favourite song of ours. I get a bit sentimental every time I hear it - Janet's voice & lyrics are so beautiful and contain that element of sceptic that I love about her while being full of love & hope at the same time. The song seems timeless to me, as it's about the power of song and the wonderful simplicity of pop music, that it really is for everybody. And anyone can try it. Phil's production is majestic as well - this is one of the few times I've ever been truly satisfied with a song and, as I'm sure any songwriter will tell you, that is very rare. The weirdest thing about Glokenpop is it was arduous and hell for us to finish. After I had initially written the keyboard hook, Janet & I spent weeks in the studio trying to get the lyrics just right... it was fucking torture! ( Whitt found us a bit intense so went off & wrote Jellybean Drifter at the same time) Strange that such a happy song can be so full of difficulty - we felt very much like Tin Pan Alley writers working on this track. Much more like songwriters than performers. But we got there in the end and it really was worth it. I will always love this song.
