RACKETT

I TRIED TO QUIT

Musicology follows punk quartet Rackett on their I Tried To Quit tour. Taking in the Kyneton Music Festival, performances with Fight Ibis, Spiral Perm and stop off to the Triple J studio.

Ally and I hit the road early on Thursday 25th Oct 2018 and made it to Albury by sunset, just in time to enjoy some of the many highlights The Paddlesteamer Motel has to offer. We enjoyed the tranquil water fountain overlooking the BP petrol station, the life size crocodile statues by the pool were are very adventurous touch. The attention to detail was very impressive, very memorable. We spent the night eating pizza on the floor and packaging our merch before getting a good night sleep and heading south for Melbourne the next morning.

Astrid and Kat flew to Melbourne on Friday and we all met up before going to visit Claire Money at Triple J unearthed.

Then onto The Workers Club for soundcheck and set-up. Kat and Astrid did most of the setting up, Kat blasting her guitar amp between dance warm ups to Devo. Doors open and up first on the stage is three piece Melbourne band; Spiral Perm. Such a treat to be playing with Ali, lead singer and guitarist of Spiral Perm. Ali and I met years ago when I was performing as Bec and Ben and she was playing guitar in Damn Terran with Lachlan Ewbank (now the second guitarist in DZ Deathrays). Sick chicks.

Next up was Fight Ibis. Fight Ibis will be joining us for all our ‘Tried to Quit’ shows and to be honest, if these guys get a chance, soon enough, we’ll be supporting them. Think, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizzard with Andrew Stockdale’s vocal tone. Seriously, they are amazing. Last support of the night was The Belair Lip Bombs. We played with them last time we were in Melbourne at The Cherry bar, watch out for this band too, I’ve got a feeling they’ll do really well. So, it’s 11.30pm, we’re up. From stage I’m looking out into a crowd of familiar faces. The same faces, show after show, making us feel welcomed and supported in Melbourne. We played some new tracks, some old ones (only by request) and it all seemed over too soon. Hugs and kisses and back to the hotel (yes, said hotel, no motel this time).

The next day we head to Kyneton ahead of our double appearance at Kyneton Music Festival. We check into our cottage ‘Doris of Kyneton’. Woah, what a trip back in time. The most current thing there was a copy of Women’s Weekly 2000. Lino floors, super weird pictures and ornaments. Ally told me after we left the next day that it was haunted. We arrive at Kyneton Music Festival, it's adorable and full of kids; YES! We love playing to kids. I’m getting amongst the moshpit of 5 year olds and loving it. There are kids playing pretend guitars with pieces of wood they’ve found from crates and we’re all having a great time. I made an announcement to the crowd prior to the show that this would be a ‘G’ rated RACKETT show, subbing in family friendly lyrics for our usual 18+ audience, but we let them know the ‘M’ rated version would be performed at our second appearance later that night at the adjoining dive bar; Major Toms. It went off, and some of the parents who had dropped home their children and returned for the second show were acting more ‘M’ rated than us, it was wild. All piled into this little sweat box of bar, barely fitting onstage, it was awesome. Meanwhile our Perth mates, The Southern River Band were playing on the main stage. We were pretty bummed we didn’t get to see them play, but great to catch up with them. The next day, Kat and Astrid returned to Major Toms to see it in the light of day and were very flattered to see all the staff wearing RACKETT tees.

It was a great trip, solid turn outs, sold all our merch and we’re very excited for the shows to come. So, we’ll see you on the 17th Nov Sydney?
